Dental Implants

There are many options for replacing missing teeth.  One option for replacement offered by Dr. Hansen is a dental implant.  Implants are one of the most popular restorations available for many reasons.  This method of restoration allows the patient to continue with normal life, eating, drinking, talking, smiling, and laughing as before the tooth loss.

Although implants have been available since the 1960s, dental technology has made many advancements, making them even more popular.  Besides replacing single teeth, implants are also used to anchor dentures and bridges for advanced stability and appearance.

An implant is technically made of three parts, although the dental community refers to it as a single entity.  The three components are the screw that replaces the root, the abutment that holds the replacement tooth (a crown), and the crown.

Implants are the healthiest restoration because it replaces the root of the missing tooth.  By saving the root, the jawbone and gums still receive the natural stimulation caused by chewing, reducing bone loss and the “sunken-in” look of patients with bone loss in the jaw.

The implant screw is also made of titanium, which is a substance shown to bond with bone structures.  The bonding creates a more stable jaw bone with better bone density.
