Fillings

One of the biggest causes of damage to teeth is decay or cavities.  The smallest of cavities need to be repaired as soon as possible.  When cavities are not repaired, the decay will spread, become larger, and eventually lead to tooth loss.  When decay progresses beyond a certain point, it also allows bacteria to enter the body.  The resulting infection can cause more than just a toothache.  It can make you sick.

After the cavity is removed from the tooth, the resulting hole needs to be filled.  This filling can be done using different types of material to seal the area and also builds the tooth back up to its original shape.

A numbing agent is injected below the tooth with the cavity to prevent any discomfort during the filling process.  When numb, the decay is removed with special tools, and then the filling is placed in that area.

The types of fillings include gold, silver amalgam, porcelain, and composite resin.  Each has a different strength and functional ability.  The best filling material for each patient depends on where the filling will be placed and how the patient wants it to look when finished.
